National Black Voter Day

This announcement coincides with National Black Voter Day, which aims to encourage Black Americans to register to vote by November. The initiative is led by Black Entertainment Television and involves 40 civic organizations, including the NAACP and the National Urban League.

Harris on Black Men’s Votes

Earlier this week, Harris spoke to the National Association of Black Journalists in Philadelphia about her support among Black men. A recent NAACP poll found that around a quarter of young Black men under 50 support former President Donald Trump, while about half back Harris.

Harris emphasized, “It’s important not to assume that Black men are just going to support me. I’m working to earn their votes.”

HBCU Background

As a graduate of Howard University, Harris would be the first HBCU graduate to serve as President if elected. Her campaign highlights her ties to HBCUs, noting the Biden-Harris administration’s significant investments in these institutions.

“In my experience as a Howard graduate, I know that HBCUs are vital centers of academic excellence,” Harris stated in May. “For generations, they have significantly contributed to America’s leadership both at home and abroad.”

Harris also actively supports her alma mater, attending events like the Celebration Bowl and cheering for Howard’s teams during the NCAA tournament.
