The IPL 2025 season will have a total of 74 matches, just like the last three seasons. This is ten matches fewer than what was listed in the 2022 media rights agreement, which initially planned for 84 matches in the 2025 season.
Changes to Match Count in Media Rights Deal
When the media rights for 2023-2027 were sold, the IPL had planned for different numbers of matches each season: 74 games for 2023 and 2024, 84 for 2025 and 2026, and a maximum of 94 matches in 2027. According to ESPNcricinfo, one main reason for sticking with 74 matches in 2025 is to reduce the workload on Indian players, who are preparing for major tournaments like the World Test Championship final in June 2025. The BCCI wants to ensure that key players get enough rest, especially with India’s packed international schedule.

IPL 2025 Schedule and Match Considerations
Although the IPL 2025 schedule is not confirmed yet, it is expected to take place between mid-March and late May. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently told the Economic Times that no decision has been made about increasing the number of matches to 84. He explained, “While 84 matches are part of the contract, it is up to the BCCI to decide whether to organize 74 or 84 matches based on players’ workload.”
IPL Media Rights Packages and Revenue
In 2022, the IPL became one of the richest sports leagues worldwide in terms of per-match value when media rights were sold for INR 48,390.5 crore (around USD 6.2 billion). The rights were divided into four packages:
- Package A: TV rights for the Indian subcontinent
- Package B: Digital rights for the Indian subcontinent
- Package C: Digital rights for special high-profile games in India, including playoffs and finals
- Package D: Global media rights across five regions
Impact of Match Numbers on Media Packages
The number of matches in a season affects how many high-profile games are included in Package C. For seasons with 74 matches, the special package includes 18 games. If the total match count goes up to 84, the number of high-profile games would increase to 20. For a 94-match season, it would rise to 22. The special package covers key games like the tournament opener, weekend evening games, and the playoffs, including the final.
