Former Australian coach Darren Lehmann has stepped down from his assistant coaching roles with the Brisbane Heat and Queensland men’s teams to take up a full-time radio commentary position with ABC Sport for the upcoming Australian cricket season.
Resignation After One Year Left on Contract
At 54, Lehmann had one year remaining on his contract as assistant coach for both teams. He was part of the Heat’s coaching staff when they won the Big Bash League (BBL) title last season, marking their first championship since he led them to victory in 2012-13.
Joining ABC Sport for Summer Coverage
Lehmann had been set to continue under new Heat head coach Johan Botha, after Wade Seccombe’s departure earlier this year. However, Lehmann decided to step away just before the 2024-25 season begins. He will now focus on his new commentary role, which includes coverage of the Border-Gavaskar series and the BBL for ABC Sport.

Potential End of Coaching Career
This move could mark the end of Lehmann’s coaching career. He had recently applied for head coaching positions with the Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades but lost out to Tim Paine and Cameron White, respectively.
Lehmann Reflects on His Time
“I’ve had an amazing time with lots of great memories,” Lehmann said. “I wish the best for everyone at Queensland Cricket and the Heat. I’m grateful to the staff and players for making my time so rewarding.“
Tribute from Queensland Cricket CEO
Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson praised Lehmann for his contribution to the state’s cricket scene. “Darren has been a positive and proactive force in Queensland cricket, whether as head coach of the Bulls and Heat or helping individual players improve,” Svenson said.
He added that winning last season’s BBL was a fitting send-off for Lehmann. “While we were looking forward to working with him this summer, we wish him all the best in his new role with ABC Sport.“
New Era Under Johan Botha
As Lehmann leaves, Andy Bichel remains the only member of the coaching staff for both Queensland and the Heat, as the teams begin a new chapter under head coach Johan Botha and high-performance manager Joe Dawes.
