David Bedingham Breaks Durham Record as Lancashire Struggles

David Bedingham Breaks Durham Record

David Bedingham achieved a career-high score of 279, marking a new first-class record for Durham in their match against Lancashire at Chester-le-Street. This County Championship clash on September 11, 2024, saw Durham maintain their dominance.

Bedingham’s incredible 279 surpassed the previous record of 273 held by Martin Love since 2003. His innings formed the backbone of Durham’s massive 573 for 9, leaving Lancashire trailing by 345 runs. By the end of the day, Lancashire was struggling at 155 for 4, with Matthew Potts taking three wickets. The team still needs 190 more runs to avoid a fourth innings defeat this season.

Record-Breaking Partnerships

On a day full of achievements, Bedingham and Colin Ackermann set a new record for Durham with a 424-run partnership for the fifth wicket, surpassing the previous best of 334 runs set in 1996. This partnership is also the eighth-highest for the fifth wicket in first-class cricket and the second-highest partnership against Lancashire.

The stand was finally broken by Luke Wells, who trapped Ackermann for 186. Wells then took two more wickets, dismissing Ben Raine for 17 and Bas de Leede for just 4.

Bedingham’s Memorable Knock

Bedingham’s brilliant innings lasted 489 minutes, during which he faced 359 balls and hit 27 fours and a six. He was finally caught at long-on by Anderson Phillip off Wells, who ended with figures of 4 for 69.

Lancashire’s Struggles Continue

Wells, who had a good spell with the ball, opened Lancashire’s second innings with Keaton Jennings, but Jennings was quickly dismissed for 0 by Potts. After tea, Lancashire lost two wickets in quick succession, with Wells bowled by Callum Parkinson and George Bell out for a duck.

Josh Bohannon added 73 runs for the fourth wicket with Matty Hurst, but Potts struck again, getting Bohannon caught at slip for 56. Hurst remained unbeaten on 43 as he and George Balderson held on until the close of play.

Lancashire’s Relegation Worries

Lancashire only earned one point from this match so far, which does little to ease their relegation concerns. Meanwhile, Durham has secured eight points and looks set to add more.
