Shreyas Iyer is facing tough times in Test cricket. He has not been considered for the upcoming Test series against Australia. In the current Duleep Trophy, Iyer has only managed to score 104 runs in four innings, which has put him further behind in the race for a place in the Test team. Players like Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel have been performing well, which makes it harder for Iyer to get back in. With Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul already included in the squad, Iyer’s poor form is hurting his chances of making a comeback in Test cricket.
BCCI’s Official Statement
An official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said that Iyer doesn’t have a place in the current Test team. His recent performances in the Duleep Trophy have raised concerns, especially with his shot selection on batting-friendly pitches.
“At the moment, there’s no place for Shreyas in the Test team. Who would he replace? His shot selection in Duleep has been worrying. He was well set but then played a poor shot against a spinner when he should’ve made better use of the conditions,” said the BCCI official, speaking to The Telegraph.
Hard Work Ahead for Iyer in Domestic Cricket
Another BCCI official mentioned that Iyer will need to keep working hard in domestic cricket. It’s unlikely he’ll be selected for the five-match Test series in Australia later this year.
“He could be included in Mumbai’s squad for the Irani Cup starting on October 1. Even if he gets selected for the Bangladesh T20Is, he might still play in the Irani Cup and join the T20 squad later. If he doesn’t perform in the Irani Cup, he’ll have the Ranji Trophy to make a case for himself,” the official added.
Iyer’s recent injury and his struggles against short-pitched bowling have also been considered. Although his form has dipped, the board hasn’t ruled him out completely, especially since he had a strong performance in last year’s ODI World Cup. However, his chances of going to Australia remain slim unless he regains his form quickly.
