Shakib Al Hasan recently shared that he has told the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) about his plan to retire from Test cricket after the upcoming home series against South Africa in Mirpur. However, his participation in the series depends on whether he gets the necessary security clearance. If he is unable to play in that series, the second Test match of the current series against India, which starts on Friday in Kanpur, might be his final Test appearance for Bangladesh.
Alongside this announcement, Shakib also declared his immediate retirement from T20 internationals.
Shakib Speaks to the Media
While speaking to reporters in Kanpur ahead of the second Test against India, Shakib confirmed his decision. “I’ve shared my wish (to retire) with the BCB and the selectors,” Shakib said. “They have accepted my decision and are working on making everything happen smoothly so I can go back to Bangladesh, play the two Tests or the match in Mirpur, and end my Test career there. Afterward, I can safely leave the country for any series abroad.”
He added, “It is my desire to play that (as my last) match, but if it doesn’t happen, this Test in Kanpur will be my final one.“
Retirement from T20Is
Shakib also mentioned that he felt his last T20 International match was during the recent World Cup. “I’ve spoken to the board and selectors about it. I’ve been looking ahead to the 2026 T20 World Cup, and I believe this is the right time to step away so the BCB can bring in new players. Hopefully, they will find great talent, and we will perform well in the 2026 World Cup.“
Concerns About Security
Shakib also addressed security issues, saying, “As a Bangladeshi citizen, I don’t have any issues returning to Bangladesh. But once I’m back, that’s where my concerns begin. My safety and security while living in Bangladesh worry me, and my close friends and family have shared similar concerns. I hope things improve and a solution is found.“
